Hans Jørgensen Wegner
(1914 – 2007)

Hans Jørgensen Wegner, a Danish designer, was born in 1914 in the municipality of Tønder, Denmark. Known as the "master of chairs," he let an indelible mark by creaIng over 500 chairs during his career, securing his place among the most influential figures in Scandinavian design.

From a young age, Hans J. Wegner was drawn to cra.smanship and aspired to become a wood sculptor. This led him to acquire cabinetmaking skills before commencing his career in 1936 as a designer at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts.

Over the decades, Hans J. Wegner collaborated with various Danish furniture manufacturers, including Carl Hansen & Søn, creating a vast array of pieces ranging from chairs and tables to sofas and lighting fixtures. His work significantly contributed to defining the Scandinavian style, characterized by elegant simplicity, the use of natural materials, and meticulous attention to detail.

Among his most famous creations are the Ox chair, the Shell chair, and the Wishbone chair, which blend great comfort with sculptural beauty. Hans Wegner was honoured numerous times for his work, receiving the prestigious Lunning Prize in 1951. This award recognised Scandinavian designers for their contributions to industrial design and craftsmanship. His legacy endures through his timeless creations, continuing to influence contemporary design.
