Carl Malmsten, a Swedish furniture designer, architect, and educator, was born in 1888 in Stockholm. He is renowned for his significant impact on Scandinavian design, his dedication to traditional craftsmanship, and his opposiIon to functionalism.

Malmsten didn't pursue a conventional education to become a furniture designer. His career truly began in 1915 when he won the first and second prizes in a competition organized by Svensk Form and architect Ragnar Östeberg to design furniture for Stockholm City Hall. This success propelled him to increasing fame.

A pioneer of the Swedish Grace movement, Malmsten adeptly combined simple and elegant aesthetics, clean lines, and a preference for natural materials. Throughout his career, Carl Malmsten designed a wide range of furniture, including chairs, tables, armchairs, and sofas, among which the Latag Greven chair and the Gamla Berlin stand out for their generous forms and plush cushions.

In the realm of education, Carl Malmsten founded the renowned design school, Capellagarden, in Sweden, contributing to the preservation of artisanal trades by training numerous craftsmen, artists, and designers.
