Ilmari Lappalainen, born in 1918, was a renowned Finnish designer active from the late 1940s to the late 1970s. He first earned a degree in woodworking instruction in 1939, followed by a degree in interior design in 1947.
After his studies, Lappalainen began his career at Asko, one of Finland’s largest furniture manufacturers, where he was hired as a permanent designer. He also taught and designed interiors for department stores, public spaces, and Asko hotels.
Among his most famous creations is the "Laila" lounge set, designed in 1948, with the original sketches preserved at the Lahti City Museum. He also designed the "Seija" rocking chair and the "Pulkka" armchair.
The chairs in the "Columna" series were initially marketed as health chairs due to their thoughtfully ergonomic design, even receiving medical approval.
Lappalainen passed away in 2006, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Finnish design.
