(1918 – 70s)

Asko, a Finnish design company founded by carpenter Aukusti Avonius in 1918 in Lahti, quickly became a major player in furniture and home appliances. Specializing in mass production and retail, Asko set itself apart from the trend of the time, which favored unique, customized pieces. Over the decades, the company became a reference in the design world, both nationally and internationally. Asko is responsible for some of the most iconic designs of the Finnish modernist era.

In the 1930s, Asko expanded beyond Finnish borders. Its minimalist style and upholstered furniture earned it international fame. After World War II, the company stood out under the leadership of designer Olli Borg, collaborating with renowned Finnish talents. Among them, Ilmari Tapiovaara designed iconic pieces like the Fanett Chair (1955), Crinolette Chair (1958), and Aslak Chair (1958). Tapio Wirkkala also created a low table in 1958, decorated with his famous leaf pattern. Ilmari Lappalainen designed the Pulkka Lounge (1963), and Stefan Lindfors developed the Draco Chair (1993). These Asko creations have become essential references in modern design.

The most famous collaboration remains with designer Eero Aarnio, who pushed the boundaries of furniture design by using molded fiberglass and later polypropylene to create innovative chairs such as the Ball Chair (1963), V.S.O.P. Chair (1966), Pastil Pod Chair (1968), and Tomato Chair (1972).

Since the 1970s, Asko has undergone several mergers and acquisitions. While the company no longer produces classic design pieces in the 21st century, it remains a prosperous and popular brand, one of the most recognized in Finland. At Norki, we are proud to offer a pair of Finnish-style armchairs, designed for Asko, that perfectly embody the legacy of this iconic company. These armchairs are a tribute to Scandinavian design and Asko's craftsmanship.
