Nanna Ditzel, born on October 6, 1923, in Copenhagen, is one of the leading figures of 20th-century Danish design. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, she began her career during a time when Scandinavian design was gaining global prominence. In 1946, she established a workshop with her first husband, Jørgen Ditzel. Together, they created innovative furniture whose organic and functional forms had a profound impact on modernist design.
One of her most iconic creations is the Nanna Ditzel desk, designed with three drawers and crafted in veneered walnut. This piece, both elegant and practical, perfectly illustrates her approach: minimalist and functional design that highlights the natural beauty of materials. The desk is a testament to her talent for designing pieces that seamlessly combine aesthetics and utility, making it an icon of Scandinavian design. This desk, carefully sourced and treated like a jewel by Norki, is available in our boutique in Megève.
After Jørgen’s passing in 1961, Nanna Ditzel continued her career alone and moved to London in 1968. There, she opened her own studio and explored new materials such as polyester, while continuing to collaborate with craftsmen and manufacturers.
Throughout her career, Nanna Ditzel received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale and the Danish Design Award. Her work continues to be produced and exhibited worldwide, reflecting her lasting influence on modern design.
Nanna Ditzel passed away on June 17, 2005, leaving behind an invaluable legacy. Her creations continue to inspire contemporary designers and embody the innovative spirit of Danish design.
