A Brief History of Valentine’s Day

February 14th, once known as XVI Kalendas Martias in the Roman calendar, coincides with the Lupercalia, ancient festivities in honor of Faunus, celebrated between February 13th and 15th. These mysterious and ritual-filled pagan celebrations were dedicated to fertility and love, marking a time when nature itself seemed to awaken with the budding spring.

The true origin of Valentine’s Day lies in 14th-century England, a deeply Catholic kingdom. February 14th became associated with lovers not only because of the belief that birds chose their mates on this day but also to honor the union of hearts. This tradition, vibrant in the Anglo-Saxon world, gradually spread across Europe over the centuries.

Poets of the time, such as Othon de Grandson, who lived in England, Geoffrey Chaucer, and their contemporary Charles of Orléans, captive in England, often mentioned this special day. For them, February 14th was the day lovers chose their partners or renewed their vows of eternal love. Legend has it that Charles of Orléans, in tribute to his mother Valentine Visconti, who presided over a "Court of Love," instituted this saint as the patron of lovers. However, as a resident of England, he may simply have borrowed the custom from Chaucer, who had already adopted it in his writings.

Saint Valentine of Terni, celebrated every February 14th, was officially designated by the Catholic Church in 1496 as the protector of lovers. Pope Alexander VI, while granting him this title, did not fail to denounce certain aspects of the tradition, notably the practice of "valentining," which seemed to flourish beyond the bounds of propriety.

It was Pope Gelasius I, a Berber bishop of Rome, who fixed February 14th as Valentine’s Day. According to some sources, his roots lie in the African province of Ifriqiya, now Tunisia. Yet, the customs associated with this holiday quickly gained momentum. By the 19th century, they became particularly popular among the European aristocracy before spreading to the general population in the 18th century. However, in the 1704 edition of Vie des Saints by Adrien Baillet, Saint Valentine was not yet mentioned as the patron saint of lovers.

Over the centuries, Valentine’s Day has taken many forms. The tradition sometimes extended over an entire week, during which each "Valentine" sent a letter to their beloved. On the day of the Brandons celebration, they pledged their love through dances and festivities. But it was in the mid-19th century in the United States that Valentine’s Day transformed into a commercial celebration, with the rise of greeting cards and tender notes exchanged between lovers—a reminder of a time when love was whispered in secret.

By the 20th century, Valentine’s Day gradually shed its religious roots to become a secular holiday marked by affectionate gestures, declarations of love, and gifts. Yet behind this modern celebration lie centuries of history and beliefs tied to the mysteries of love. So much so that, despite Saint Valentine’s removal from the Roman liturgical calendar in 1969 by Pope Paul VI, the tradition remains alive in popular customs and many regional calendars.
