Throughout the years, and as a guiding thread, Norki follows its vocation as creators of objects. A wind of freedom regularly sweeps through the Maison, guiding it along the paths of creation.
At Norki, craftsmanship, seen as an act of bravery, is never neutral, and handiwork must serve a greater purpose. The idea is to celebrate imagination when times become uniform and to attempt a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic idea of elegance and simplicity, but above all, to achieve perfect harmony of objects from a vast array of influences: the times are constrained, escape is essential. The 2023 Capsule Collection, aptly named "Fluxus," perfectly illustrates this creative and bold logic, a signature of the Maison. At the crossroads of exceptional craftsmanship and innovation, Norki thus redefines the traditional boundaries of design and offers you a truly personal interpretation.
1. Why « Fluxus »
Why "Fluxus" Latin word meaning fluctuating, is a state of mind, a way of life where only freedom of expression matters, whatever its form.
Born in 1960 in New York and Tokyo, it quickly spread to other German cities – Cologne, Düsseldorf, Darmstadt, Wiesbaden, Wuppertal – and then to European cities – Paris, London, Amsterdam, Nice, Copenhagen. The world of Fluxus artists, with very different and eclectic origins and paths, is formed of eclectic personalities and knowledge, examples of which include: Yoko Ono, a musician and literature researcher, George Maciunas, a musicologist, art historian, and architect, George Brecht, a chemist, Alison Knowles, a painter, Robert Filliou, an economist and poet.
This international, transdisciplinary artistic movement aims to be rebellious, anti-conformist, without rules and boundaries. Artists and creators are not confined to boxes from which civil and artistic society prevents them from escaping. Naturally, this limitless creative logic, which advocates the abolition of rules and norms, resonates strongly with Maison Norki and guides this eponymous Capsule Collection: a haute couture craftsmanship work where harmony gives way to a quasi-pictorial, even musical improvisation, and where a choreography of movements and gestures unfolds and captivates us.
2. The "Fluxus" Norki Capsule Collection
Fluxus: a name, a concept, a revolution. This bold collection is a dreamlike project that disrupts the codes of decoration by offering unique and daring objects that challenge minds and make us think. A deconstructed rug that pushes the limits of contemporary art, cushions that defy established norms… And what if we dared everything? Let’s forget the pre-established rules and let ourselves be carried away by creativity.
A Rug and Cushions as Works of Art We unveil the centrepiece of this artistic proposition: an oversized, deconstructed octagonal rug that defies codes and rules by merging both a curved motif and borders made of protruding and recessed angles.
Its strong and antagonistic colours – black, Klein blue, and white – structure it and create captivating and disconcerting depth. This trilogy of colours, reflecting stories, daydreams, feelings, and states of the soul, becomes one and creates a "joyful chaos" that comes to life without a real concept, without a real rule.
This rug/canva then becomes the starting point for a quirky line of cushions with shapeless forms. For Norki, the “free electron,” a cushion does not require a predefined shape. The contours of these everyday objects become irregular and are punctured in the centre with gaping holes, questioning our formatted minds about their utility.
These creations, a nod to an extraordinary modernity, reflect a new exploration of craftsmanship that mirrors Norki’s unwavering commitment to seeking a new perspective for design, blending rare expertise, textures, and play of materials, with anti-conformism.
The very theme of this Capsule Collection precisely describes the Maison’s desire to break free from themes to better let imagination and freedom speak and to challenge the real and the imaginable between innovations, references to Art, and exclusive narratives.
3. The Luxury of a Unique Object, Between Museum Piece and Artistic Work
These Norki objects, rugs, and cushions, break the often imposed boundaries between the world of Art and the world of craftsmanship and become unique pieces to exhibit. These creations humorously question traditional thought patterns and perception and lend a certain poetry to our everyday objects. Interior decoration becomes playful and diverse, offering a reflection on the world around us and that which restricts us. We are far from a single thought, and Norki indeed offers you an “out of frame” thought process.
