Dare to Use Color: Reinventing Interior Design with Boldness and Emotion

Far from aesthetic dictates and monochrome codes, the art of interior design finds in color a means of expression as subtle as it is evocative. In a world where beige, grey, and white seem to have taken center stage, it is worth remembering that color, far from being a mere question of trends, is a true language that shapes our spaces and our state of mind.

What if we allowed ourselves to step off the beaten path and embrace uniqueness—a touch of joy and emotion in our interiors?

Color as an Emotional Barometer

Every shade that adorns our walls, furniture, armchairs, or sofas carries an emotional charge. A color can awaken buried memories, amplify an emotion, or even influence our current mood.

Some colors, like yellow, prove particularly powerful. A true ray of sunshine, yellow is synonymous with light and energy. It invites joy, chases away melancholy, and can even stimulate creativity. Victoria-Maria Geyer has masterfully and subtly introduced this often-overlooked hue in a creation designed for our home: the Riviera Mireille rug.

Alongside it, green—the ultimate color of nature—evokes serenity and harmony. It has the power to soothe us and create a calm atmosphere conducive to relaxation. Pistachio or olive green, for example, bring a gentle freshness that helps create an interior where the mind finds refuge, becoming almost poetic. You can find this color featured in some pieces from our Spring/Summer 2023 Collection – The Secret Garden – such as our The Fairy rug and the matching cushion.

Forest green, on the other hand, with its deeper tones, adds a more mystical dimension and enriches the space with an aura of refinement. This shade is regularly used for upholstering vintage furniture, such as the iconic Berlin sofa.

Blue, another color beneficial to the mind, embodies both depth and tranquility. From the clear azure of the sky to the mysterious midnight blue, it remains a safe choice for living spaces such as the living room or bedroom, where comfort and relaxation are desired. Depending on its shade, blue can create an atmosphere conducive to introspection or conviviality. It lends itself beautifully to a subtle play of contrasts, pairing well with warmer or more neutral tones for a balanced effect.

Blue, in all its shades, is featured in many creations across our various collections. Our Étretat rug, for example, evokes the ebb and flow of the sea, while our Saint-Peter cushions reflect its mysterious depths.

As for orange, it embodies boldness and conviviality. More than any other color, orange has the ability to energize a space. It warms the atmosphere, catches the eye, and creates a sense of well-being, all while injecting a touch of liveliness. When used with discernment, it can transform a dull room into a vibrant and welcoming space without overwhelming it.

You will find this strong and bold hue in our Laszlo rug, a vibrant tribute to the Bauhaus movement.

Just like the seasons that mark our daily rhythms, color in our interiors follows natural fluctuations. There is a true alchemy between the outside ambiance and the interior atmosphere, with seasonality playing a key role in the choice of shades.

Autumn, for example, invites us to surround ourselves with warm and deep hues such as ochre, terracotta, and deep browns, evoking falling leaves and twilight. In winter, more neutral tones like pearl grays and off-whites bring a soft light and discreet comfort.

In spring, light greens and tangy yellows infuse the air with a gentle promise of renewal. Finally, summer calls for bright blues, turquoise, and vibrant oranges, like an explosion of colors perfectly in tune with the sun and surrounding nature. Through its own cycle, color helps us navigate the changing seasons, strengthening our sense of connection to the natural world while creating an atmosphere suited to each moment of the year.

Colour, a trick of intelligence and sizes

The intelligence of color lies in its ability to communicate with space, to elevate it, to animate it without ever overwhelming it. It’s not about multiplying shades without thought, but rather about choosing the hues that resonate with us, those that awaken our sensitivity and tell a story. The secret lies in balance, complementarity, and the subtlety of associations.

One key approach is the use of bold colors in measured proportions. It is entirely possible to dare a deep blue or a vibrant yellow in an interior without it overpowering the overall ambiance. The trick is to integrate them with finesse, whether through accents like cushions or artworks, or with small touches on a wall. Colors should thus create a harmonious interaction with textures, materials, and light.

Daring to move away from convention, a leitmotif of our Maison

It's high time to challenge the traditionally accepted hues as essentials in interior design.

Why limit ourselves to immaculate white, timeless beige, or gray, which, while elegant, sometimes struggles to bring warmth? The current trend seems more than ever to encourage breaking away from this uniform neutrality and experimenting with color to create a space that reflects our individuality.

Daring to use color is daring to claim a unique identity, to free ourselves from the constraints of fleeting fashion and established conventions. Everyone deserves to live in a home that embodies their aspirations, desires, and even contradictions. Why not design a living room with shades of blue and green to create a calming atmosphere, complemented by touches of orange to add energy and cheer? The goal is to build a living space that mirrors the person who inhabits it: unique and authentic.

Dare, explore, express yourself—but most importantly, make your home a place where color is not invited out of obligation, but out of the desire to live in a vibrant world that is both thoughtful and bold.
