PORTRAIT of a Art Photographer – GRIET VAN MALDEREN
griet van malderen –Wildlife Art Photography
Born in 1970 in the Flemish region of Belgium, Griet VAN MALDEREN became a wildlife photographer after a simple family safari in South Africa in 2008. She developed a passionate affinity for the continent, its landscapes, flora, and fauna. Since then, Griet has extensively traveled in various regions of Africa, including Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Congo, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. More recently, she has explored Antarctica, Chile, Brazil, Canada, Norway, the Tonga Islands, and Japan.
Her Signature
Her preferred photography style is black and white, sometimes applying sepia tones. Griet also creates platinum and collodion prints. Her approach differs from that of her colleagues because she does not force her subjects to pose for her photographs. Instead, she takes the time to earn their trust, capturing their authentic emotions and feelings. Some describe her style as feminine.

How did your passion for wildlife photography begin?
My passion for wildlife photography began after a memorable experience in South Africa during a family trip. It was there that I was awed by the exceptional wildlife, and my passion for photography truly took root. Since then, I have returned to Africa to capture its beauty and share it with the world.
Wildlife photography is not just a career for me; it’s a way of life. I am continually inspired by the beauty of the world and the animal kingdom, and the intense emotions they evoke in me. My goal as a photographer is to capture these emotions and the connections I feel between the animals and myself, to share them with others.
Why choose black and white photography?
My work focuses primarily on black and white photography, which highlights the contrasts and atmosphere of my subjects. However, I also use colour and sepia tones when necessary to capture the essence of certain animals. Each photograph is a unique expression of my emotions and my connection with the animal.
What is the importance of photographing animals in their natural habitat?
As a wildlife photographer, I am passionate about capturing unique moments that highlight wildlife and animals in their natural habitat. With my camera and telephoto lens, I have the privilege of immortalizing unique moments and capturing the beauty of wild animals and wildlife in general.
It is indeed crucial for me to photograph animals in their natural environment. I refuse to use captive or manipulated animals, as it goes against my deep convictions: animals must be free to live in their natural habitat. Sometimes, it takes hours or even days to get the perfect shot, but every moment spent with them is worth it when I can convey the unique emotion and relationship I feel.
How do you create striking photographic portraits?
During my photo shoots, I strive to create striking photographic portraits that highlight the personality and essence of the animals. Using high-quality photo equipment, I try to translate beauty by showcasing the aesthetic aspect of nature and biodiversity. My work as a wildlife photographer allows me to capture exceptional nature photos, images that reflect the true essence of wildlife. I use creative framing techniques and play with depth of field to achieve visually striking results.
Why is raising awareness about the importance of animals crucial?
Wildlife photography also allows me to raise awareness about the importance of animals for our survival. Our planet faces numerous environmental challenges, from climate change to habitat destruction, which significantly affect wild animal populations worldwide.
As a wildlife photographer, I have had the privilege of witnessing these challenges. I have seen habitats degrade and species essential to our ecosystems decline. These experiences have reinforced my belief that animals play a crucial role in our survival and that it is imperative to act to protect them.
How do you support nature conservation organizations?
In addition to my passion for photography, I am actively committed to supporting organizations that work on the ground to preserve animals and their habitats. These organizations play a vital role in protecting vulnerable species and raising awareness about nature conservation. I firmly believe that every small gesture counts and that supporting these organizations is essential for our survival and that of the animals with whom we share our planet.
Through my photographs, I hope to raise public awareness about the importance of wildlife and the need to protect it. I believe that by sharing my experiences and emotions with others, I can help inspire people to act and make a difference. Whether it’s supporting nature conservation organizations or making small changes in our daily lives, every little step counts in protecting our planet and the animals that inhabit it.
What is your aspiration for those who discover your work?
I hope that my work will inspire you to see the world with new eyes and appreciate the beauty and majesty of nature. Thank you for your attention, and I hope you enjoy my photographs as much as I enjoy creating them.
