about Saint-Louis

An incomparable material, dense, clear, sonorous, and luminous, born from a ball of fire and the breath of men, Saint-Louis crystal vibrates with all the talent inherited from history and the incredible creative fantasy inspired by the spirit of the times.

In 1767, Louis XV authorized the construction of a glassworks on the site of the former Münzthal glassworks from the 16th century. The king granted it the title of "Royal Glassworks of Saint-Louis." Fifteen years later, with the development of the crystal formula, the Manufacture became Saint-Louis Crystal Works.

Since then, Saint-Louis has been signing crystal pieces every day – lighting, tableware, decoration, and furniture – made by master glassmakers and master cutters among the Best Craftsmen of France. All hold an irreplaceable, ancestral know-how enriched from generation to generation: mouth-blown crystal, hand-cut, engraved, and decorated by hand, with 24-carat gold or platinum. Their talent has made Saint-Louis an expert in color and cutting. With a palette of over 10 colors, which can be used in mass or double, and a multitude of cuts including the emblematic diamond cut, the Manufacture offers a wide variety of styles and exceptional creations.

Saint-Louis is a Manufacture in tune with the times, a clever blend of tradition and innovation, which has never ceased to draw its inspiration from contemporary artistic trends to build and renew its identity.

In the wave of creativity that characterized the early 20th century with Art Nouveau and Art Deco, many designers brought their talent to Saint-Louis. Artists such as Paul Nicolas, Jean Sala, Jean Luce, Michel Colle, and Maurice Dufrêne, to name a few.

Today, Saint-Louis still calls upon the imagination and talent of designers who introduce new uses in the world of crystal. The collections of tableware, decoration, and lighting are enriched by the creations of Éric Gizard, Hervé van der Straeten, Ionna Vautrin, José Lévy, Kiki van Eijk, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Paola Navone… These are objecting whose beauty enhances moments of pleasure and sharing

The Folia Lantern – The new icon of contemporary light at Saint-Louis

Saint-Louis continues the development of contemporary lighting by enriching the family of lanterns from the bestseller Folia collection, designed by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, with a new, unprecedented shade: a charcoal black ash, combined with a new bronze metallic setting. This new extension of the lantern pays homage to the meeting between the brilliance of crystal and wood, unique to the Folia saga.

An object in use and without boundaries

A new definition of lighting The lantern is undoubtedly one of the iconic objects of the Folia collection, and more generally, of Saint-Louis lighting. It captivates with its exceptional reflections, like a graphic and soft drawing that can be projected wherever desired. The use of the luminaire is completely rethought through this lamp that fits into any decor to bring a light, soft or intense according to desire. This unsuspected nomadism reverses the codes of indoor and outdoor lighting to make it flexible and spontaneous.

The modern interpretation of a long tradition

At Saint-Louis At Saint-Louis, the mastery of crystal has been expressed since the 16th century in lighting, tableware, and decoration. Luminaires, in particular, are the subject of long work involving many craftsmen to achieve exceptional shapes, colors, and sizes that give birth to timeless pieces. It is with the utmost skill that Saint-Louis today offers contemporary collections in the world of lighting that unite the know-how of glass art with cutting-edge and modern technology. From the creation of a majestic chandelier to that of a portable lantern, Saint-Louis marks its desire to explore, reinvent, and surprise.

The Newness – A lantern in black ash and 3 crystal finishes

Its inspiration

In 2021, the charcoal black ash enriches the lanterns of the Folia collection. To design this light object, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance drew from the universal character of nature.

"The Folia collection is inspired by the small lights of the Saint-Louis workshop ovens that never go out, the Vosges Forest that surrounds it, the tales and legends of the region. A fairy tale transcribed in the Folia lantern, a piece that can be taken anywhere like a sentinel to light one’s steps. It took us two or three years to finalize this model to perfectly work on the incidence of light. And finally, it combines cutting-edge technology and the charm of lanterns." Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance

The black ash brings a new modernity to the graphic decor of the lantern. This shade pays homage to the wood of the mallet blackened by the roughing practiced by master glassmakers and the patinated metal of their tools. The black wood takes us back to the origins of Saint-Louis, an elegant nod to the wood burning in the ovens of old times, fueled by the forest surrounding the manufacture.

Its detail

Condensed technology at the service of crystal, the Folia lanterns are autonomous, nomadic, and wireless lamps. They can be used indoors or outdoors. Rechargeable, they have an autonomy of up to 25 hours when used at low intensity.

This luminaire is made of crystal with bevels, on which a box covered with stained ash is placed, including LED technology and a lithium-ion battery. The handle is in brushed brass or anodized bronze aluminium, equipped with a touch switch to adjust the lighting power with three light intensities.
